Mexico 2-3 England: Three Lions hold on to reach quarter-finals after World Cup classic

England have booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup after beating Mexico in an all-time classic at the Azteca Stadium.

The 10-man Three Lions became the first team to win at the iconic ground since 2013, holding on after Jarell Quansah was sent-off in the second-half.

Jude Bellingham scored twice in two minutes to give Thomas Tuchel’s side a dream lead before Julián Quiñones pulled one back before half-time.

Harry Kane and Raul Jimenez both struck from the penalty spot after the restart with England surviving a late onslaught to book their place in the last eight.

Norway await in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Fighting the elements and history at the Azteca in a game that was delayed by an hour, England took a stunning lead late in the second-half with Bellingham’s one-two combo flooring the hosts and silencing the crowd.

The Real Madrid star stooped low to head home Bukayo Saka’s cross before pouncing for another 99 seconds later.

But England were given a reality check four minutes later as Quiñones lashed into the roof of the net.

Quansah, given the nod at right-back with Djed Spence deemed not fit enough to start with Reece James still unavailable, saw red after 54 minutes after a dangerous challenge on Jesus Gallardo that sparked chaos in the Mexico dugout.

But six minutes later England extended their lead with Anthony Gordon, impressive on the left, brought down with Kane doing the honours from 12 yards.

More VAR drama followed; Kane involved again with the captain judged to have clipped Brian Gutierrez’s foot.

Jimenez, denied twice in the first-half by two excellent Jordan Pickford saves, stepped up to slam home and set up a final stand-off.

Dan Burn, John Stones and Spence were thrown on as England went into lockdown, defending heroically to keep a final Mexican push at bay.
