Jack P Shepherd admits ‘struggle’ with task he faced after Hanni Treweek gave birth

Jack P Shepherd has revealed there was one very important job he was given during the birth of his daughter, but things didn’t quite go to plan.
The Coronation Street star has opened up about welcoming his fourth child, daughter Constance Ita Shepherd, with wife Hanni Treweek, admitting he struggled when it came to confirming whether their newborn was a boy or a girl.
Speaking to former Corrie co-star Colson Smith on their podcast On the Sofa, Jack explained that he and Hanni had decided to keep the baby’s sex a surprise throughout the pregnancy.
Despite that, everyone around them seemed convinced they were expecting a boy.
Jack joked that he had even heard plenty of old wives’ tales along the way, including the idea that a smaller baby bump means you’re having a boy while a larger bump points to a girl.
According to him, though, that theory couldn’t have been more wrong.

When the big moment finally arrived, Jack was given the responsibility of announcing whether their baby was a son or a daughter. The only problem? He couldn’t actually see.
The newborn was placed straight onto Hanni’s chest for skin-to-skin contact, while the midwives instinctively began referring to the baby as ‘he’.
It wasn’t until Hanni questioned whether they had actually had a boy that Jack took another look before confirming they had, in fact, welcomed a baby girl.
The hilarious story left Colson in stitches, joking that Jack should ‘add it to his CV’, while someone off-camera dubbed the actor ‘Jacky the Doula’.
Jack appeared to agree with the new title, as the On the Sofa Show’s Instagram page shared a clip from the podcast alongside the caption: ‘Added to the CV. Jacky P the Doula.’
Jack and Hanni announced the arrival of their daughter earlier this week, revealing they had welcomed Constance Ita Shepherd during a peaceful home birth.
Sharing a photo of the newborn on Instagram, Hanni wrote: ‘Our beautiful baby girl has arrived, born peacefully at home, surrounded by love.’
The couple have since also revealed how they settled on their daughter’s unusual name.
Speaking on the On the Sofa Show again, Jack admitted that choosing a name wasn’t exactly straightforward.
‘What you do is when you’re picking names, you Google,’ he explained. ‘You’ll go French names, Italian names, something that’s a bit, you know, European and posh. That’s what we were thinking.’
He said the couple wanted something a little different before landing on the perfect choice.
‘Constance came up and it was probably the only one that we both agreed on.’
Although he admitted they also had a boy’s name ready just in case, fans won’t be finding out what it was anytime soon.
‘Yes. I don’t want to reveal my name, and someone steals it. Even though I am fully aware there is still one other in the world,’ he joked.
Jack and Hanni revealed they were expecting their first child together back in February, several months after tying the knot in July last year.
Sharing the news at the time, they posted a black-and-white pregnancy video showing Hanni cradling her growing bump as the pair held up a tiny pair of knitted baby booties.
‘We’ve been keeping a secret…June 2026,’ they wrote alongside the sweet clip.
Constance is Jack’s fourth child, with the actor already a dad to three children from previous relationships.
Away from family life, it’s a busy year for the Celebrity Big Brother winner, who has played David Platt on Coronation Street for 26 years.
He’ll also be swapping Weatherfield for the stage this Christmas, making his pantomime debut as the Prince in Llandudno from December 12 until January 2.
