Maria shatters Gary as it’s all over in Coronation Street spoiler video

Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) didn’t half make a mess when she bashed Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) upside the head and sent him tumbling to the ground below in Coronation Street.

We don’t mean a literal mess, although she did that, too, leaving Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) traumatised by finding his broken corpse.

We mean a figurative mess in that, she’s utterly annihilated several relationships with how she handled the slaying: namely, summoning Gary Windass (Mikey North) to help her deal with the aftermath of her maiden voyage into murder-dom.

For the longest time, the two stole whispers in dark corners and held clandestine meetings in the builder’s yard, and this did more than arouse the suspicion of Gary’s wife, Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon).

Maria was sad, confused, hurt, vengeful and just about every other emotion a human being could muster, especially having provided Gary with a false alibi.

It wasn’t just her in her feelings, either. Sarah’s other half, copper Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) was convinced that Sarah was knocking off her flame-haired former fella.

This all led to a dinner party from hell that would’ve broken even Lisa Rinna and left Gary and Maria at breaking point.

Continuing with the relationship destruction, Sarah admitted her guilt to her best friend and Theo’s victim, Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), who declared their relationship dead, then came the admission to Kit, who was in the process of proposing, in what may go down in history as the worst response to the question: ‘will you marry me?’

Next week sees Maria learn from Fiz Dobbs (Jennie McAlpine) that she’d overheard Kit announcing that Gary was to be arrested imminently, leaving her fraught with panic.

As it turns out, though, the end of the stick Kit had was the wrong one, and before long, Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) is hauling Sarah in for questioning, before slapping her with a murder charge.

This isn’t enough to settle Maria, though, and the next day, she spells it out for Gary: she’s absolutely terrified that the police will release Sarah and come for him instead. Gary tries his hardest to reassure Maria, but he’s distracted, fraught with worry for Sarah who’s currently languishing behind bars.

The following day at work, she’s smacked in the face with another discovery: while tending to Sally Metcalfe’s (Sally Dynevor) locks, Maria zeroes in on her client’s screensaver: a picture from the night of the wedding.

A picture with a very familiar face in the background, which clearly shows that Gary was out and about on the street on the night of Theo’s murder, despite feeding her a pack of lies that he’d spent the night in the builder’s yard.

She has Sally send her the picture, and confronts her husband back at home, at which point he realises that she has him bang to rights. With this huge piece of evidence, surely Maria’s in big trouble, right? It proves the alibi she provided was false.

The next day Maria manages to brave face it when their boys, Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall) and Jake Windass (Bobby Bradshaw) announce they’re going out for a kick about.

Things are light hearted as they tease Gary, before heading away. Once they’re alone, though, Maria’s face drops to her feet, as Gary again tries to reassure her that there’ll be no comeback on them.

Maria’s incredulous, though. Can’t he see that they’ve already been destroyed by all of this? Their relationship is broken, and she simply can’t see a way back for them.

So is that it? Is that the end of Mary? Garia?! …did we ever decide on a name?
