Christina’s mystery phone calls in Coronation Street explained as a big shock is in store

This article contains spoilers for tonight’s (Monday, June 15) Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on YouTube and ITVX.

Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney) angels, the lady squad who’ve come together to support their friend throughout her battle with early-onset dementia have been one of the high points of Coronation Street since they formed.

Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove), Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins), Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) and Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) are the girl gang we’d all like to be a part of, a posse of strong, supportive and truly wonderful northern ladies.

Sally – the ally – can be a little irritating with her deeply engrained superiority complex, Glenda’s lack of a boyfriend can leave her feeling a bit blue, Bernie can be a total headache and Debbie’s a handful – which has nothing to do with her condition.

But Christina? She’s actually a bit of a mystery and while she’s won the hearts of Coronation Street viewers since actor Amy’s role was upgraded from a guest to a fully fledged series regular, she was actually a bit of a cow in her first stint.

Arriving prior to the wedding of her daughter, Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan), to Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard), she kicked off a blistering feud with Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews). While Christina pledged her support to Daisy, who was enacting a cruel con on Jenny, it soon became clear that Christina was planning to fleece her own daughter, and Daisy ultimately departed alone with the loot.

Upon her return the following year, Christina reignited her beef with Jenny, but this time they weren’t battling for cash, but for the attention of local undertaker, George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley).

Christina ultimately claimed her prize, with Jenny leaving the street, and she quickly became ensconced in Weatherfield, surrounded by George’s own surrogate family, namely Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), and, for a time Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).

Theo, of course, was recently murdered after his monstrous true colours were exposed and the vicious campaign of abuse he’d put Todd through became public knowledge.

With Christina named as an official suspect in the case, she’s been, thus far, ignored by Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) and Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), the cobbles coppers, despite being caught lying about her movements on the night of his death and seemingly pushing George to implicate Summer.

Christina also made a phone call, pleading with the person on the other end for help, but just until she ‘sorted the mess’ she was caught in.

Today’s double episode of Coronation Street saw Debbie’s angels assemble to give her an experience she’d never forget. After Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) attempted to organise a Spanish getaway for the squad, Debbie brought the group to Earth with a bump – she didn’t feel as though she could safely leave the country with her condition.

Though the group were disappointed, they understood her concerns, but Ronnie was left with an idea and roped the crew in to help make it a reality.

As the girls headed out to ‘get things ready’ for Debbie, Ronnie led her toward the function room, under the impression that the electrics had failed. When the lights came up, though, the group had created a Spanish wonderland, fully furnished with Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) as their personal waiter, who had an array of costumes suited to each woman’s personal fantasy.

Throughout the day, though, Christina was distracted, particularly by her phone, despite the group vowing to ignore all outside interferences and, most importantly, the men in their lives.

With Christina acting shiftily, she appeared to go under the radar, until Sally and Glenda exchanged some cross words, and Sally referenced Christina’s continuous use of her phone.

In their summer soap preview, TV Times magazine revealed that Glenda will pursue Christina’s secret, and ultimately discovers that Christina is still in contact with her ex-husband Lenny, leading her to fear that Christina actually has less than honourable intentions toward her brother.

But with so much secrecy, and the lingering question of Theo’s murder still hanging over Weatherfield, is Christina merely playing away, or covering up for a much darker secret?
