EastEnders fans spot problem with very confusing Gray scene

Ladies and gentlemen, he’s back. After four years in the slammer, EastEnders’ most hunky serial kill Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) has exploded back onto our scenes. But fans have spotted something amiss.

Albert Square’s most sinister solicitor first set foot on the Square in Walford in 2019 with wife Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer), who he was abusing behind closed doors. In a rare and devastating twist for an abuse story, Chanelle couldn’t escape, and Gray murdered her.

However, the monster’s taste for blood had only just for begun.

During his two year reign of terror, Gray would kill Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami) in cold blood to stop him from taking away Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), who he had developed a twisted obsession with. The murderer then strangled Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) to death after she discovered the terrible truth about what he did to Chantelle – thus becoming a serial killer.

All the while, Gray led a double life, beginning a relationship with the oblivious Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams), who later gave birth to their son Jordan.

Fortunately, soap justice was ultimately served and thanks to Whitney, Gray’s reign of terror finally came in 2022, when Gray was locked up behind bars where he belonged and Chelsea was free to start a new chapter

However, there was one reminder of Gray left – his grandmother Sheila (Sheila Ruskin). She got in touch with Chelsea after Jordan was injured in a hit-and-run caused by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt). After four years, the prospect of Gray being back in her life sent chills down Chelsea’s spine, hence her very understandable decision to cut contact.

But Sheila didn’t take no for an answer. When she turned up in Walford without invitation for the second time that week, Chelsea put her foot down and refused to have her boundaries disrespected.

Terrified that she would lose access to her grandson, Sheila did what any rational person would do – visited her serial killing grandson in the nick to ask him for advice.

Bad move.

The villain’s return was hailed by EastEnders Executive Producer Ben Wadey. ‘We’re delighted to welcome Toby-Alexander Smith back to the role of Gray Atkins.’ He announced. ‘Although his character remains in prison, it will soon become apparent to viewers that Gray’s physical separation from Walford is no match for his levels of manipulation.’

However, something about the killer’s connection to Sheila has left eagle-eyed fans scratching their heads as they flocked to social media to point out the plot hole

“It’s weird to me how they made it seem like Sheila was still in contact with gray with the way she was stroking his photo in her wallet like she kept in contact with him even though he murdered 3 people.’ One fan wrote. ‘But then when we actually see gray he says she hasn’t visited him in the 4 years he’s been locked up.’

A second backed up this opinion, pointing out that Sheila doesn’t appear to have any attachment to Gray at all, making her decision to reach out even more baffling: “I was a bit confused by this. I thought they would be building toward a story where she’s a bit obsessed and thinks that he’s done nothing wrong. Maybe under his spell, doing what he wants, and maybe seeing him in Jordan. Instead, it seems more like she just wants her grandkid and is going to use him to help her along.”

A third agreed: “This confused me too. The impression I got is that they were always in contact and maybe she was going to try and convince Chelsea to let Gray his child. Sheila trying to get Gray to get Chelsea to let her see the kid is strange.”
