Is Cassie dead? All Coronation Street hints and theories
This week, Coronation Street fans said goodbye to Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) in what was perhaps the most mysterious exit of the year.
Having been disowned by son Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and dumped by boyfriend Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), Cassie decided that she needed to get away from Weatherfield.
A cleaning job on a cruise ship provided the ideal opportunity for a fresh start, but you all know we wouldn’t be here if things had ended that neatly!
While Cassie was on her way to meet Steve for a final conversation, Ross Wilkes (Ian Burfield) ordered her into his car. When she later tried to get out, he locked the doors and sped off.
But where did he take her? Did Cassie ever make it to the cruise ship? Or is something more sinister afoot?
Is Ross hiding something?
As if the manner in which Ross drove away with Cassie wasn’t suspicious enough, the fact that he later had the photo Fiz Dobbs (Jennie McAlpine) had gifted her in his possession is enough to get us scratching our heads.
Not to mention that he has consistently told different stories about picking Cassie up and where he dropped her off.
Given that Cassie hasn’t answered her phone or been in contact at any point since her exit, it certainly suggests that he might have done something to her…
Although, phone service can be spotty on cruise ships, so it could be totally innocent.
Is Cassie dead?
Things may not be looking great for Cassie right now, but there is some hope that she’s still alive out there somewhere.
Actress Claire Sweeney decided to leave the ITV soap when she was offered her dream role of Miss Hannigan in the UK tour of the musical Annie.
However, she made it very clear that she loved her time on the cobbles, and explained that the door had been left open for her return.
‘I only left because a project I’ve been working toward for 15 years finally came to fruition, and I simply couldn’t turn it down,’ she said.
‘I made sure to speak to our lovely producer, Kate Brooks, six or seven months in advance, so the team had plenty of time to craft a proper exit. I think that planning really shows in the story.’
On Cassie’s decision to leave, Claire added: ‘She feels she has absolutely no choice. She has been rejected by the love of her life, Steve, and everyone else has turned their backs on her. She feels her life there has been destroyed.
‘The only option left is to take that job on the cruise ship. Whether she actually makes it to that ship or what happens when Ross takes her—that’s the beauty of it. No one knows, and it’s left wonderfully open.’
It sounds like she wants to return in the future, and she can’t do that if Cassie is dead. Will the mystery of Cassie’s exit ever be resolved?
