Hollyoaks star Gregory Finnegan reveals villainous Emmerdale role he nearly played

Gregory Finnegan may have recently secured a permanent return to Hollyoaks, but the actor has revealed that he almost landed a role on a rival soap during his time away from the Channel 4 series.

The actor debuted as James Nightingale back in 2016, though there was a shock in September 2024 as the popular character was seemingly killed-off. More drama was to come, as the lawyer came back from the dead in October.

The comeback has been intermittent, however, as James’s screen-time has been minimal since his shock return. This is partly due to Finnegan becoming a drama teacher in his time away from the series, but the actor was still seeking roles.

Speaking to The Sun, Finnegan revealed that he was in talks with ITV soap Emmerdale about playing the villainous Ray Walters, with that character being involved in a dramatic storyline which touched on themes such as generational trauma and slavery.

“There was a possibility of going in and playing a character,” recalled Finnegan. “It didn’t come off, and now, looking at it, I’m glad that it didn’t. But at the time, I could see myself getting my teeth into that character.”

“But, you know, that’s the way things go. I did my version. I think they liked it. It didn’t go my way, but yeah, it probably worked out for the best in the end,” added the actor, who has also appeared in EastEnders and Casualty.

The part of Ray eventually went to Joe Absolom, who had previously appeared in EastEnders and Doc Martin. The actor departed the ITV soap in February after a seven-month stint, with the villain being killed-off.

As noted, missing out on the part may have been a blessing in disguise, with Finnegan agreeing to a full-time return to Hollyoaks last month. Though we don’t know storyline details, the death of Rex Gallagher has opened the door for a reunion with Ste Hay.

“There’s plenty to explore with James – with Ste still in the village, a new-look Leah on the scene and Lucas coming back soon too,” teased our insider. “Also, with the crime rate in the area as high as ever, the residents could definitely do with a good lawyer!”
