Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) thought he had found a way to channel the big emotions he was feeling in the wake of his dad’s cancer diagnosis – and it was to pick up a lighter and start barn fires on Emmerdale Farm.

For ages, the farm was tormented by a mystery arsonist who had cleverly gone unidentified.

At first, it was believed the fire starter was after Moira (Natalie J Robb). Then, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) became terrified the flame throwers were after him. Poor Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) even took the blame for a while when he was unfortunately spotted with a petrol can.

All along it was Kyle; struggling with rejection from his dad and fearing loss he grabbed a lighter and did his worst.

He even burned the car he and his dad had been working on after Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) rejected him one too many times.

Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) accidently caught the lad in the act by being in the right place at the right time, and he tried to get him to see the light, as it were. He attempted to encourage Kyle to tell his dad how he feels and tried to straighten him out by signing up to the cadets.

Graham gave Kyle a watch to show that he believed in him, recognising how lost the teen seems to be feeling, but the damaged lad smashed it by throwing it against the wall.

Graham thought he had saved the day, but then as Cain got news his cancer wasn’t gone, the fires started up again.

All of this, and Cain still has no idea.

He’s about to though, when Lydia (Karen Blick) lets slip that Kyle has Graham’s watch. That leaves Cain scratching his head, unable to see the connection between the two.

Graham is soon in a position where he feels the need to confess Kyle’s crimes to his dad. Cain is shocked, but the thing Cain focuses on here is not the pyrotechnics, it’s that his son told someone else how he was feeling and not him.

A selfish response, some might say, one confirming Kyle’s sense of isolation. Cain’s pride dented, he confronts Kyle, but will Kyle give up the truth?
