Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney admits sadness at Maureen Lipman’s absence from her exit
There’s always a tearful goodbye on Coronation Street, especially when your mum isn’t there to see you off. As Cassie Plummer prepares to leave Weatherfield behind, actress Claire Sweeney admits that one person felt missing – her onscreen mother, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman)
Claire’s final scenes as the delightfully gobby Cassie air next week when the proud Mama bear of Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) loses her family and her fiancee after her effort to oust her predatory ex Ross Wilkes (Ian Burfield) from her family end in disaster.
Her plot to make sure Ross failed a drug test at his new job ended in tears when her fiancee Steve discovered her plan to spike her ex’s smoothie. This resulted in Steve dumping Cassie, and Tyrone throwing her out.
Devastated to have lost the trust of her family, Cassie has no reason to stay on the Cobbles anymore and takes a job as a cleaner on a cruise ship.
However, just as she’s about to leave, Ross arrives in his car and offers to give her a lift.
Reluctantly accepting, Cassie gets in. The next we know, Ross is locking the doors and speeding off into the distance. That’s the last we see of Cassie.
In a recent chat with Metro, actress Claire Sweeney reflected on her final scene, and what truly felt like her goodbye to The Street.
‘It’s funny because my very last scene—the one where I’m driving away—was actually filmed two or three weeks before I finished. Because of that, it didn’t feel like a true ending. For me, the final scene in the Dobbs house felt like the real goodbye because that’s where I started with Alan, Jennie (Fiz Dobbs), and the kids.’
But despite her tear-jerking final au revoir, Claire couldn’t help but feel there was someone missing.
‘I missed Maureen Lipman so much; I would have loved for her to have been there for that.’
Maureen Lipman, who plays Cassie’s acid tongued battle-axe of a mother, made the decision to reduce her screen time on Coronation Street in order to appear in a brand new production, Allegra. a show stuffed with music and comedy by Peter Quilter, it launched during Maureen’s 80th birthday celebrations and will tour the UK before settling in to a West End run.
Evelyn played an integral part in Cassie’s history on the Street. It’s scarecly been a year since Ty met his mother Cassie for the first time, after his mother abandoned him at a police station.
Cassie struggled with addiction for many years, and finally managed to get clean and be the mum he always needed. Throughout her endeavours to be there for her boy, Evelyn was the stern hand that guided her.
However, Maureen has made her stance on a comeback as perfectly clear as Evelyn herself, previously revealing to the Mirror that if she were to make another debut, she’d want a ‘proper storyline’.
‘I love Corrie but I don’t know when I am going back, they asked me at Christmas. I said, ‘I will come back, but you will have to give me a proper storyline.’ I am not just coming back to stand in the Rovers Return and say, ‘I’m back’. Who cares?’
She later added: ‘It is a perfect job and I could be in it for the rest of my sane time.’
Unfortunately, that’s a no for an Evelyn return for now. But Cassie’s exit was heart-wrenching enough. Claire Sweeney shared her favourite final scenes with Steve McDonald.
‘Another moment that really stands out was the proposal scene with Simon Gregson. It was so brilliantly written—it managed to be funny, poignant, and everything in between. It really captured that full-circle moment, moving from when Cassie arrived as a “baddie” to the redemption she eventually found.’

Sadly, that love story was cut short by the arrival of Tyrone’s long lost dad Ross, who is quite happy to play the family man while hiding the truth… that he paid to sleep with Cassie when she was fifteen years old. `
He’s already threatened to kill Cassie. And her very ambiguous exit will leave fans wondering he’s made good on his threat. Claire spills the tea on the new villain.’
Oh, he’s a ‘smiling assassin.’Claire insists. ‘He is so good at that charm, but there’s a chilling quality to him when the cameras are off. I remember a scene we filmed in the Ginnell where he had me up against the wall; he was truly terrifying. Cassie is a survivor, though. When she tries to get rid of him—even with the crushed tablets—it isn’t because she’s inherently malicious; it’s a survival mechanism.’
‘She knows he’s bad news and that he’s fooling everyone, especially Tyrone. She doesn’t necessarily want to hurt him; she just desperately wants to get rid of him before he causes more damage.’
Assuming that Cassie is still alive, she is primed for a comeback. The actress left after getting the part of Miss Hannigan in Annie The Musical. Would she ever be prepared to come back to the Cobbles and put Ross in his place? Claire Sweeney is only too keen.
‘I would love to come back.’ Claire gushes. ‘There was no other reason for me to leave other than getting the part of Miss Hannigan. I was genuinely so happy Corrie. I loved the work, the people, and the routine—it really is like a family. I only left because a project I’ve been working toward for 15 years finally came to fruition, and I simply couldn’t turn it down.’
‘I made sure to speak to our lovely producer, Kate, six or seven months in advance, so the team had plenty of time to craft a proper exit. I think that planning really shows in the story.’
