‘Missing’ Coronation Street star confirms return to screens after months

The fans demanded, and Coronation Street delivered. Quite possibly the most popular recurring character on the show, PC Jess Heywood is back to walk the beat on the Cobbles once more, as actor Donnaleigh Bailey leaks her return to Weatherfield online with a cheeky Instagram post.
The minor character became a major hit with viewers, after diehard Corrie-lovers bombarded the show’s social with requests to make the brilliant bobby a permanent addition to the cast.
Corrie fans will recall that the copper, played by actress Donnaleigh Bailey, first joined the show back in 2017 as a mentor to Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) to show him the ropes as he began his career in the force.

Since her successful debut, Jess has appeared on and off in Weatherfield ever since, returning last summer to pay her last respects to her fallen colleague after he was violently killed in the line of duty by the villainous Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton).

Jess’s next return was in April, during Coronation Street’s special ‘Behind Closed Doors’ episode focusing on Todd Grimshaw’s (Gareth Pierce) horrific domestic violence ordeal at the hands of his abusive partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright).
Todd was seen getting his injuries photographed as evidence in the police station when he locked eyes with another domestic abuse victim, being escorted through the station by Jess.
Months after he last appearance, Donnaleigh confirmed her triumphant return to the Street on Instagram by sharing her video of herself in a police uniform inside a dressing room.
The star set the post to the song ‘Getting Arrested By The Police’ by The Very Nice Interesting Singer Man, along with the caption ‘Waiting to go on set got me like….’ alongside police-themed emojis.

This comes weeks after she posted another video, again rocking that high viz jacket in inside a studio dressing room, which she captioned: ‘PC Jess loading,’ delighting Corrie fans up and down the nation.
One fan seemed genuinely gutted that Jess wasn’t the one who slapped the cuffs on Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) when she was arrested for murder earlier this week.
‘Sorry you missed out on the battering ram arrest today!’ one fan wrote.
Another even pitched a potential romance for the character with local cheeky chappy Ryan Connor.
‘Yesssssss Jessssssss , we need you and Ryan together’,
Another simply wrote ‘Can’t wait to see more of PC Jess!’
This isn’t Donnaleigh’s first time in Soapland. It’s not even her first time in uniform. The actor is best known for playing Michelle Corrigan in BBC’s axed medical drama Doctors, after originally joining the show playing another role, Jessica Collins.

The soap star has also had roles in both Casualty and Holby City, and even played two separate parts in Coronation Street before she was ever cast asPC Jess. She played a nurse in Nurse in 2015, and a different police officer, PC Woodruff, in 2016.
With Jess’s return imminent, the question is, what crime will Weatherfield’s newest girl in blue be on the case for? Is her return to do with Theo’s murder investigation, the charges that Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) filed against Dylan (Liam McCheyene) for Betsy’s (Sydney Martin) injuries… or something else entirely?
