Betsy Swain’s (Sydney Martin) entire world came crumbling down around her when she suffered a stroke, after she and boyfriend, Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne), participated in consensual strangulation during sex.

The stroke was caused when the pressure that Dylan applied to Betsy’s neck during the act damaged her artery, and when Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) found her unconscious after a collapse, he rushed her straight to hospital.

While Carla Connor-Swain (Alison King) attempted to keep her calm, Betsy’s mum, Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) was practically vibrating with fury and lay the blame entirely at Dylan’s feet, something he struggled to handle, accusing Betsy of cheating with Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) and trying to blame him for the damage.

Betsy has been left with aphasia and dysarthria, two conditions that affect her ability to speak, while Dylan has been dealing with the reality of the situation he’s found himself in.

‘You’ve got a teenage girl who has slept with her partner, a very common teenage activity, and as we’ve seen from the statistics, there’s that pressure to not be vanilla or ‘frigid’ Sydney explained while talking to Metro.

‘To put that on Dylan, and seeing Liam play it out, even in Wednesday’s episode, there’s such an air of innocence to it all.

‘In both of their eyes, they’ve done no wrong. They’re just experimenting with something that seems so natural.

‘I mean, the law was only brought in last year that you have to prove your age to watch porn.

‘These are people who have only just turned 18 who would have grown up with access to porn and access to that side of things, and to see sex portrayed in a light that’s not realistic and that’s heightened. So, I really feel for both of them in this situation.’

While this week sees the young couple facing their new realities, next week seesBetsy being being visited by everyone’s favourite neighbour, Roy Cropper (David Neilson), who helps her with her speaking.

Afterward, having spoken to a doctor, Carla excitedly tells Betsy that she’s due to be released the following day. While acknowledging the good news, Betsy’s nervous at what the means for her recovery.

Can Betsy settle into her new normal? Or is even more heartbreak on the horizon?
