Hollyoaks star confirms surprise new Lucas ‘romance’ as he stages return
Hollyoaks star Oscar Curtis is back filming after a well-earned break and he couldn’t be more excited about getting back into character as Lucas Hay.
Last we saw Lucas, he was serving time in prison after attacking and holding dad Ste (Kieron Richardson) hostage in his own home.
The young chef, as viewers will recall, discovered that Ste had been sleeping with his ex-boyfriend and one true love Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass) behind his back, which left him utterly broken.
Lucas was jailed for what he did but, despite having previously claimed to have fallen out of love with him, Dillon resolved to pay his ex a visit behind bars – and he soon started to catch feelings once more.
With some help from James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan), Lucas briefly escaped prison to go on the run with Dillon but ultimately he had second thoughts and, wanting to do the right thing, he decided to stay in jail an serve out the rest of his sentence, bidding farewell to his first love in emotional scenes.
Series star Oscar took a break from filming but he is back on set and he recently caught up with Metro to discuss his comeback.
‘I had a really nice break,’ he said. ‘I’ve been filming for three years straight pretty much so I think it was a needed break – and it made sense with the character going to prison.
‘I was in LA for a month, it was nice to reset. The reception coming back has been great. Slipping back into filming is like you never left – after five scenes it’s like that break just went like [click].
In terms of what’s to come for Lucas, Oscar confirmed that his on-screen alter-ego will be attempting to make things right upon his return. ‘For Lucas, it’s picking up where he left off,’ he teased.
‘I can’t say too much but I think he wants to fix everything that led him to prison. A big part of that is his relationship with Ste. That was the boiling point. It’s about mending that. Or if he can!’
The character will also return with a friend.
‘They’ve got a bit of history in prison which we revisit, almost,’ he said. ‘But from what we’ve filmed they appear to be just really close mates who look out for each other. And I think Lucas needs that.
But is romance on the cards with this friend? Oscar remained tight-lipped on such a thing – but it’s not being ruled out either. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
‘He’s had people in the village – Dillon, Frankie, Ste, Leah – that are here and gone. This new potential character seems to be a good friend!’
And on the topic of Leah, Lucas’ sister is back in the village with new star Charlotte Alex Riley taking over the role. On playing opposite Charlotte and building up Lucas and Leah’s relationship, Oscar said: ‘I think it’s nice because it’s reigniting the chemistry between the siblings. That’s important because they’re brother and sister, they’re in the same age range.
‘In the village, they’re quite pivotal characters so it’s nice to explore that bond. Previously they did have scenes together but now we’ve got a lot of scenes. So that’s good!’
